Don was born of Swedish immigrants who settled in Chicago. Eric Gunnar Erickson immigrated from Arvika, Sweden and was from a family of craftsman while Ebba Linnea Larson was raised in Olmstad, Sweden. Her family who were farmers, midwives, artists and church organists.
Gunnar and Ebba met and married in Chicago and had one child, a child who aspired to become an architect from an early age and who fell in love with the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and who came to call Wright "his second father."
